Tourism

Folyás

Folyás is one of the smallest settlements of the region; it is situated in the area limited by the rivers Tisza and Hortobágy. It can be reached from Budapest by driving along the motorway M3 to Polgár, then by turning in the direction of Tiszacsege. Its name can be found even in medieval documents. A significant site of the copper age which has become known as ‘Tiszapolgári kultúra’ (culture of Tiszapolgár) has been excavated on the bank of the river Selypes. The ruin of a church which is outside the village, next to the public road is the memento of the World War II. One of the largest battles took place here on 9 October 1944, it is known in the history as the tank battle of Debrecen or Hortobágy. The church, which was built by the grand provost Endre Pánthy in1892, fell victim to this battle. There are also some German, Hungarian and Russian military graves near the ruin of the church. The Nyugati Main Channel and the nearby fishing lakes which are stocked intensively offer varied possibilities to the lovers of angling – in summer time even to the lovers of night angling – and to people seeking waterside solitude. In the surrounding woods both small and big game can be found.

Polgár

Polgár can be reached from Budapest easily by driving along the motorway M3. It lies on the left bank of the river Tisza, so it is absolutely suitable for leisure activities connected to water. The symbol of the settlement is its remarkably spacious and majestic church which is a beautiful example of the late classicism. The famous historic building complex of the town is the Kálváriadomb (Calvary Hill). It has a spa which is open all year round and where several pools and sport establishments of high quality serve both the younger and the older. The parkland on the territory of the bath offers possibilities to the families to have quiet relaxation and pleasant recreation. The thermal water of Polgár increases the physical condition and the resistance of the human body against infection excellently. A boating lake and a forest park of 20 hectares belong also to the bath. A camping which can sleep 300 people is situated next to it in a quiet neighbourhood surrounded with a wood. The wood and the lake near the town with their rich stock of game and fish offer possibilities for hunting and angling. The bird-watching places make the knowledge of natural values possible

Görbeháza

Görbeháza can be found in the north-eastern part of Hungary, in the Tiszántúl region, on the north-western border of the Hortobágy puszta, in the county Hajdú-Bihar. It can be reached by driving along the motorway M3 to Polgár, then on the main road No 35 in the direction of Debrecen. The original name of the village Görbeháza was Görbeházpuszta, which belonged to the neighbouring settlement Polgár. It was named after an L-shaped house which was called “görbeház” (‘curved’ house) in this area. According to the tradition this house was a country tavern with a big cellar on the border of the Hortobágy puszta and a lot of herdsmen and outlaws visited it. Its remains can still be seen. The settlement offers possibilities to active recreation. There is a fishing lake near the village and there are hunting possibilities in the surrounding woods. Due to the favourable situation of the village the open-air baths of the nearby settlements and the Hortobágy National Park can be reached in a short time.

Újszentmargita

The settlement is situated on the eastern border of the Tisza Lake Region. It can be reached from Budapest by driving along the motorway M3, then by turning in the direction of Tiszacsege. In the Middle Ages a prospering village stood here which was mentioned in 1261 for the first time. It could have been named after the patron saint of its church, Saint Margaret of Antioch; its owner was the chapter of Eger. The so-called ‘kunhalmok’ (artificial hillocks serving for burial places, watch-post or boundary mark before the time of the Hungarian conquest) mean variedness of the landscape (Halmos-halom, Király-halom, Koponya-halom, Szandalik-halom). The wood of Újszentmargita belongs to the reserves on the border of the Hortobágy National Park. The pleasant neighbourhood of the smaller fishing lakes, the Homokbánya Lake (Sand Mine Lake) and the Nyugati Main Channel could be suitable for aquatic sports and - due to its rich stock of fish – for sport angling. The sights of the neighbourhood are the Tilos wood (‘Forbidden wood’) with its rare flora and fauna, the Roman catholic church, living waters and their surroundings, as well as the puszta and its fauna. Its programs offer a possibility for relaxation all the year round.

Újtikos

Újtikos is situated on the north-western border of the Hortobágy puszta, its western border stretches over the Borsod flood plain a little, which belongs to the flood plain of Middle-Tisza. It can be reached from Budapest by driving along the motorway M3 to Polgár, then by turning in the direction of Nyíregyháza. According to the Etymological dictionary of geographical names the name of the village is actually ‘tyúkos’ (‘tikos’ is a dialectical word for ‘tyúkos’), the arms of the settlement seems to verify it, too.
The settlement which is mainly suitable for active recreation offers possibilities for riding and cycling tours, bird-watching and herb gathering. There live some species of animals which are significant in terms of hunting and there is some water which is rich in fish on the administrative boundary of the settlement.

Tiszagyulaháza

Tiszagyulaháza is situated in the north-western part of the county Hajdú-Bihar, on the left bank of the river Tisza, opposite the mouth of the river Sajó, on the border of the region Hortobágy Tiszamente. It can be reached from Budapest by driving along the motorway M3 to Polgár, then turning in the direction of Nyíregyháza. Tiszagyulaháza became independent in 1908. Due to its natural endowment it has its own Tisza bank. In the mouth of Sajó there is an extraordinarily varied pisci- and avifauna. Visitors can find here a settlement which is suitable for active recreation and where riding, cycling and water tours, as well as angling possibilities are waiting for the tourists. Hunting is also possible on the administrative boundary of the village.
